Dartmouth Alumni Seminar 2009: Adventures in Air and Space
Date: Saturday, June 20th
Time: 9:00am to 2:00pm
Location: NASA Research Park, Bldg 20, South Akron Road, Moffett Field, Mountain View, California

Join the Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network of the Bay Area at Airship Ventures at NASA Research Park in Mountain View for this year’s high-flying Alumni Seminar, “Adventures in Air and Space”.

DEN-BA members and their guests will have an opportunity to view the only Zeppelin Airship in the United States, and the largest Zeppelin Airship in the world. Attendees will hear lectures from three distinguished presenters: an innovative entrepreneur, a one-of-a-kind pilot, and a decorated Space Shuttle Astronaut (and Dartmouth alum).

And as if that isn’t enough, 12 lucky alumni will win a seat on board while the airship tours the Bay Area that day!

Meet Our Distinguished Alumni Seminar 2009 Speakers

James Newman PhD ’78 – Astronaut

Dr. James Newman began astronaut training in July 1990. A veteran of four space flights on Discovery, Endeavor (twice), and Columbia, Dr. Newman has logged over 43 days in space, including six spacewalks totaling 43 hours and 13 minutes. In July 2008, he accepted a position as Professor, Space Systems at Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California, to continue his involvement in teaching and research, with an emphasis on using very small satellites in hands-on education and for focused research projects of national interest.

Brian Hall – President

Brian Hall is an entrepreneur, community builder, master of brand development, and has an eye for market opportunities. Brian has an infectious enthusiasm for space, aviation, history, and technology, and is passionate about their intersection. His search for a business opportunity involving this powerful combination led him to Germany, where he discovered the Zeppelin NT. After flying on a Zeppelin in Germany during the Soccer World Cup in 2006, he was convinced that this unique flightseeing experience and technology must be brought to the U.S. market. Brian is responsible for the overall strategic direction of Airship Ventures and is particularly excited about the future that lies ahead for airship technology in both commercial and scientific applications.

Katharine Board – Pilot

Kate Board holds several distinctions, including being a member of an elite group even more rare than female astronauts—female airship pilots. She however, holds an even more prestigious title—the only female Zeppelin pilot in the world. From Kate’s first instruction flight at the age of 18, she has risen fast in the male-dominated world of airships. One of Kate’s first aviation positions, with Virgin Hot Air Balloon flights, led to her first airship position with Virgin Lightships. Beginning as a ground crewman, she eventually worked her way up to pilot, and has CAA, LBA, and FAA commercial airship licenses. Kate has flown extensively in Europe and America, logging more than 5,000 flight hours. At 5-feet 2-inches tall, she commands the largest airship in the world.

Inaugural Startup Meetup — 5/27/09

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Calling all entrepreneurs! Join us for an informal evening of idea sharing, relationship building, burgers & beers!

The Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network of the Bay Area is pleased to announce our first ever Startup Meetup, scheduled for Wednesday, May 27th at 6:00pm at The Dutch Goose in Menlo Park.

Our goal for the first Startup Meetup is plain and simple — to give local Dartmouth entrepreneurs a chance to get to know each other and share ideas. Depending on the response and turnout for the event, we may plan future Startup Meetups both on the Peninsula and in San Francisco.

In order to keep things manageable, we’re limiting attendance to 15 people. Consequently, this event will be a great chance to meet and learn from other Dartmouth entrepreneurs in a relaxed and fun environment!

If you’re interested in attending the inaugural Startup Meetup, please email us (info [at] denbayarea.org) to reserve your spot. If you’re interested in attending but cannot make our inaugural event, please let us know so we can gauge interest in future Startup Meetup programs.

Details and location info below:

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Congratulations to the two SF Bay Area start-ups selected to participate in the 2009 Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network Business Plan Competition at Tuck, organized by the Tuck Entrepreneurship Club: Gyrobike, and Agrolytics.

In the DEN Bay Area contest, the judges selected Gyrobike as the overall winner. Agrolytics and Visible Energy tied for second place. The Agrolytics and Visible Energy executive summaries were forwarded to DEN Colorado to be considered in their contest, and Agrolytics was subsequently selected to represent DEN Colorado.
